Which Social Media Platform Is Right For My Business?

July 3, 2014 by James Seymour

social media platformSo you’re raring to run a social media campaign for your business. You’ve already boned up on the most essential aspects of running a social media campaign, from the frequency of your posts to engaging your audience. Do you, however, know which social media platform to run your campaign on?

It is absolutely important for anyone thinking of running a social media campaign to fully understand which social media platform is best for their business. After all, different social media networks have different user demographics, and knowing those demographics is very crucial to running a successful social media campaign. To help you choose the social media platform to use for your campaign, here are some ideas about their demographics.

Facebook

With its more than 1 billion active users, Facebook is practically the default social media platform for any social media campaign. Effectively reaching audiences in almost any given industry is possible with the world’s largest social media network. And if your business is geared towards young women, Facebook is the perfect social media network for you. After all, surveys reveal that women between the ages of 18 and 29 make up the vast majority of Facebook users.

Twitter

Twitter may only have half of Facebook’s user base, but it’s nevertheless at the top of any marketer’s list of social media networks. Like Facebook, Twitter is a great place to launch a campaign, as it is populated by users who are always searching for content in a variety of niches. Twitter is also quite popular among young people aged 18-29. It’s also worth noting that individuals who live in urban areas and African-Americans make up a huge part of its total number of users.

Google+

Google+ may be relatively new to the social media game compared to Facebook and Twitter, but it has grown steadily over its three years of existence to more than 500 million active users, 70% of which are male. That means Google+ is the social media network for you if your business is offering products and services that are geared towards men. It’s also interesting to mention that most Google+ users are technology-savvy, having educational backgrounds in such fields as software engineering and web development.

LinkedIn

If your business is looking to connect with an older demographic, LinkedIn presents you a better opportunity to do so. The age of its users typically range from 25 to 64 years. As such, its users are more serious than those you can find on Facebook or Twitter. Educated professionals, business professionals, and high-income individuals make up the bulk of LinkedIn’s user base. Using LinkedIn is great for gaining B2B networking opportunities, and that is a great way of growing your business.

Pinterest

Pinterest probably has one of the simplest concepts in all of social media, but it has nevertheless become quite the popular network. Many users have found the idea of “pinning” images onto boards and the eye-catching aesthetic that comes with it attractive, and that is slowly but surely propelling the network toward becoming a major player in the world of social media.

If Google+ is dominated by male users, it’s the other way around for Pinterest. Females account for about 72% of its user base. Needless to say, Pinterest is a great place to launch a social media campaign if your business focuses on typically female-dominated areas such as arts and crafts, clothing and fashion, gifts, cooking and recipes, and home design and décor. The image-centric nature of the network makes it great for pinning pictures of your products or of your services in action, which can then be shared by other users quite easily

Tumblr

Businesses that cater to a very young demographic can find a very comfortable home in Tumblr, a microblogging site that allows users to share text, images, audio, links and other types of content. Its audience is made up of consumers between 13 and 25. Some people might not take Tumblr seriously because of this, but it’s worth noting that brands as big as IBM and J Crew are actually making an effort to gain a foothold in the youth-oriented social network. So if your products and services are meant for younger people, you might want to take the time to build your presence on Tumblr.

So, which social media platform do you think is best for your business?
