We live in a world where mobile devices are just about everywhere and with it comes the rise in mobile device users. Wherever you look, there would always be some person surfing the Internet using his smartphone or a kid playing games on a tablet. With the number of mobile device users growing with each passing day, it is only expected that they would soon dominate e-commerce, as an infographic on SocialMediaToday indicates.
Growing number of mobile shoppers
While we’re not really sure if all the data mentioned in the infographic is a hundred per cent accurate, the statistics are quite staggering considering how fairly recent the mobile device users demographic is relative to other types of consumers. Consider the following:
- Search engine giant Google says 72% of tablet owners buy stuff using their devices on a weekly basis.
- When the buying experience is not optimised for mobile devices, 30% of shoppers drop the transaction.
The infographic has all kinds of data regarding e-commerce, but the above-mentioned bits about mobile use are what struck me the most, particularly the second one. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a wakeup call for sites that are not optimised for mobile devices, of which there are still a lot. If these statistics are any indication, mobile device usage is only going to get bigger in the future, and your website should be riding that wave.
